There are nights when the Costa da Morte seems to defy all logic.
The sea remains silent, the wind barely stirs, and suddenly each wave begins to emit an intense blue glow. The foam sparkles, footprints on the sand leave a trail of light, and the water seems to have transformed into a starry sky.
It is the Sea of Ardora , one of the most amazing natural phenomena that can be seen on the coasts of Galicia and an experience that remains in the memory of those who are lucky enough to witness it.
Although it doesn't happen every night, when conditions are favorable, the Costa da Morte becomes one of the best places in Europe to observe this bioluminescence spectacle.
What is the Sea of Ardora?
Far from any magical explanation, the Sea of Ardora is a natural phenomenon known as marine bioluminescence .
Its origin lies in millions of tiny microscopic organisms—primarily dinoflagellates—that emit light when the water moves. Every wave, every splash, or even the simple passage of a person along the shore triggers a luminous reaction that tints the sea an intense blue. This is not pollution or artificial substances. It is a natural response of these organisms, which use light as a defense mechanism.
Why does this happen on the Costa da Morte?
The Costa da Morte has several conditions that favor the appearance of this phenomenon:
very clean ocean waters;
little light pollution on many beaches;
a dynamic of currents that favors the presence of plankton;
long stretches of coastline open to the Atlantic.
These circumstances make our coastline one of the best places on the Iberian Peninsula to observe the Sea of Ardora when nature decides to put on a show.
When can it be seen?
There is no exact schedule, and the magic also lies in the search for it...
Generally, the highest probability is concentrated between late spring and the end of summer, although in some years the phenomenon also appears during autumn.
The best nights usually have several conditions:
clear or partly clear skies;
absence of moon or very faint moon;
little wind;
relatively calm sea;
water temperatures favorable for plankton.
That very uncertainty is part of its magic: no one can guarantee when it will appear, but it is true that if reddish patches are seen on the seashore during the day... it means that there is a presence of microalgae and it is possible that the magic will happen that night.
Where can I see the Ardora Sea near Hotel Balarés?
The Costa da Morte has numerous sandy beaches where, if conditions are right, bioluminescence can be observed.
Among the most well-known, close to our hotel, are:

Rebordelo Beach
Rather than looking for a specific beach, the important thing is to find a dark, quiet environment away from artificial light sources.
An experience that deserves to be lived calmly... and with the utmost respect for nature.
Seeing the Sea of Ardora is not just about observing a curious phenomenon.
It's walking barefoot on a nearly empty beach while the waves paint blue flashes on the sand. It's hearing only the sound of the ocean under a sky full of stars.
There are no screens, no rush, no schedules. Just nature.
And perhaps that is why those who contemplate it speak of it with a mixture of awe and emotion.
However, we must do so with the utmost respect for the environment. Don't leave trash on the beach, and be very careful if you decide to swim at night, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area. It's also important to avoid using flashlights, screens, etc., or you'll obstruct the view.
